Heart of the Sun, by Mia Sheridan, is a slow burn, second chance romance. Sheridan starts the book off like any typical contemporary romance before it takes a turn that is unsettlingly realistic and surprising.
Childhood friends Tuck Mattice and Emily Swanson are reunited after thirteen years apart. Emily, a rising pop star, reluctantly hires Tuck, now an ex-con seeking a new beginning, as her bodyguard. As they fall back into their childhood bickering, attempting to work together, the old sparks begin to ignite before a solar flare thrusts the world into darkness. Emily’s fame disintegrates, while Tuck sees an opportunity to prove himself. Together, they find themselves in a dangerous world where humanity is crumbling. Every decision is life or death, and all they have is each other.
Verdict:
Pleasantly surprised by the dystopian charm. It was a believable narrative where I was invested in the outcome, and I found Tuck and Emily’s story to be heartwarming and hopeful. The audiobook was performed perfectly. Narrated by André Santana and Annalee Scott, they showcased the emotions with ease. Pacing is slow to start but picks up, and the performers do a fantastic job keeping you invested. (7.5/10)
